Our story
Underwater Africa was founded in 2015. Over the years, we have grown into what we are today: an award-winning marine research facility and volunteering programme. Fuelled by our passion for the oceans and their conservation, but also our love for sharing our knowledge and experience, we built Underwater Africa with the aim to produce world-leading science, and involving you in it!
Our marine conservation volunteer programme is at the core of our activities. With the help of volunteers, we gather tonnes of important data that we then process and turn into publications in scientific journals. These then contribute to the body of research necessary to motivate efficient and meaningful conservation efforts. Our volunteers get the opportunity to do hands-on work in and on the water, from identifying whales to measuring seahorses and analysing plankton samples. Our resident scientists give regular talks to help those that aren't yet familiar with the topics get up to speed, and challenge the minds of those that want to dive deeper into the why's and how's that govern our oceans.

Mobula
Our research vessel, a 9 meter Cobracat, is the perfect base of operations for surface research and snorkelling. Besides ample deck space for observation and equipment handling, she offers a beautiful observation deck with 360° views, perfect for spotting any megafauna in the water.
