Volunteer With
Humpback Whales
Join our volunteer programme and get up close and personal with whales!
Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) migrate from Antarctica to their breeding grounds in Mozambique every year. From June to October, we get the opportunity to study them in the wild. Through respectful, whale-led encounters, we attempt to learn as much as possible about these fascinating ocean giants. Join us in exploring why and where they migrate, how we can identify them, why they sing, and so much more.
Participating in this programme will put you in the shoes of a whale researcher. During whale watching expeditions, you will gather various types of data and observe the whales as their lives unfold in front of you. While our main focus is humpback whales, we will not turn our noses up at chance encounters with other wildlife like dolphins, rays, or whale sharks!
Why Volunteer?
By the end of your volunteer programme, you will have gained insight into what it really means to do research with humpback whales in the field, and what can be achieved with this research to reach conservation goals. You will be an integral part of our team and will witness the amazing variety the Mozambican underwater world has to offer. Whether you are looking to deepen your understanding of marine ecosystems or just "dipping your toes" in marine research, you are sure to leave with lifetime memories of adventures with new friends in the Indian Ocean.
